Owens Corning Lumber structural framing is a wood-free, fiberglass-reinforced composite alternative to traditional wood or steel deck framing. It is designed around familiar lumber dimensions and installation practices while addressing decay, rust and insect exposure.

Available through Prestige: system planning, product takeoffs, supply coordination and professional construction for qualifying deck, dock and outdoor-living projects.

Why Prestige features Owens Corning structural framing

The manufacturer rates the product for water and ground contact and describes it as rotproof and rustproof. Structural profiles include common 2x dimensions and structural posts, with published span and installation information. Colored woodgrain profiles can also create a finished-looking underside without covering every framing member.

  • Wood-free fiberglass-reinforced composite construction
  • Resistance to rot, rust and wood-destroying insects
  • Ground, fresh-water and salt-water contact ratings under manufacturer requirements
  • Common dimensional profiles that cut and install with familiar tools
  • Finished color options that can complement visible framing

Where this system fits best

This system is most compelling for waterfront decks, docks, exposed under-deck areas, low-clearance structures and premium projects where replacing hidden framing later would be especially disruptive. Its higher material cost should be weighed against exposure, desired service life and the cost of future reconstruction.

What we evaluate before specifying it

We verify spans, loading, thermal movement, approved connectors and screws, member availability, color, lead time, fire or jurisdictional requirements, and how the system interfaces with the house. Composite framing is not treated as a direct one-for-one substitution until the current span tables and connection details are checked.

Installation details that affect performance

Although it uses familiar tools, the product has its own cutting, fastening, marking and connection requirements. Ledger attachment, beams, posts, stairs and guard loads require complete structural coordination. Manufacturer-recommended stainless or exterior connector fasteners are selected for the exposure.

Northwest Washington considerations

The system is highly relevant to salt-air, waterfront and chronically damp conditions. Even a non-absorptive framing member does not make the building envelope waterproof; wall flashing, ledger detailing, drainage and metal compatibility remain critical.

Common questions

Is Owens Corning structural framing the same as composite decking?

No. This page concerns load-bearing framing profiles and posts beneath the deck. Surface decking is selected separately.

Can it touch soil or water?

The manufacturer publishes ground and fresh- or salt-water contact ratings. The application must still comply with engineering, local code and current technical documentation.

Does it install exactly like wood?

It uses familiar tools and dimensions, but spans, fastening, connections and handling must follow the Owens Corning installation guide rather than assumptions based on sawn lumber.
